German-born furniture designer Vladimir Kagan was beloved for his midcentury-modern creations, both curvaceous and modular. After moving to the U.S. as a child in 1938, he learned how to make furniture by working with his master cabinetmaker father. In 1948 Kagan opened a shop in New York, and his work quickly became incredibly popular—a host of stars, including Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol, were his clients. His furniture is not only collected privately but also appears in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.
